Who I Work With:

While working in previous, clinical settings, I have been exposed to clients of all ages. I enjoy working with children, adolescents, and adults. I have experience working with those dealing with a variety of stress and mood related issues to include but not limited to: depression, general anxiety, and trauma. As a veteran, military personnel, families and veterans are additional areas of clinical work I enjoy.

My Treatment Theories and Approaches:

There is no one size fits all type of treatment because each client has different needs. However, some approaches that I utilize include strengths-based, trauma-informed approaches, and Cognitive Based Therapy. I believe it is important to truly get to know my clients, their experiences, and the changes they would like to make. My goal is to help clients become happier, healthier, and overcome obstacles that may be holding them back. I earned my undergraduate degree from SUNY Empire State College in Community and Human Services and my graduate degree in Clinical Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University.

What Therapy Looks Like In My Office:

I understand that attending therapy can feel overwhelming, but I am here to provide a judgment- free safe space where clients feel comfortable and heard. I would like to help clients of any age become their best self by providing encouragement and support, as well as the tools they need to understand and process what they are feeling. It is a process, but I am committed to working at your pace.

Why I Became A Counselor:

I became a counselor because I have always loved helping people, but I never really knew how I could make a positive impact. I knew that I was passionate about offering a listening ear and giving advice if wanted. Toward the end of my military service, I became more attuned to the issues that friends, family and people all over the world were dealing with. At that time, I began to recognize how important mental health is in our families and communities. I realized that I could help others by providing therapy, and I look forward to joining you on your journey.

My Life Outside of Work:

I am a Navy veteran and after serving for over 14 years, I enjoy spending time with my two teenagers and spending time outside in nature.

Psychotherapy is a kind of help in which the patient or client engages with a professional trained in the science and art of understanding and alleviating human suffering. As a Psychologist and psychotherapist, I stand in the belief that I don’t do anything “to” but rather “with” and “for” others – good therapy is collaborative - and that one must avoid a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

I believe one of the most powerful tools we have in life is our voice. When we are silenced and not allowed the opportunity to express ourselves it can result in depression and anxiety. Over time it will impair our self-efficacy and value...

My role is to be side-by-side with you navigating these complex emotions and situations so that you can find the power in your voice, your body, and your strengths. My goal as a counselor is to create a positive, and reassuring environment where you can be you with all the quirks that uniquely make you – you. I believe that you are the expert of your experience, you have the answers inside of you, and we are together on this journey to unlock what is getting in your way. It is my hope to help you find strategies to interrupt patterns that are no longer serving you and create healthier paths to allow you to “be the change you wish to see.” If you choose to let me be a part of this journey with you, it will be an honor because I recognize it is hard to trust again when there have been letdowns.

I believe in the therapeutic process and consider it to consist of many forms. Each person is so unique and has their own story to tell in their own unique way and in their own time. The one thing I say to my clients in every first session, is, it starts with you. You choosing to show up to your appointment, you choosing to seek out support, encouragement, advice, a listening ear.

Denise Simpson (she/her)

When one seeks out therapy, I believe they are saying that they want a change. Sometimes we need someone to listen and ask questions so that the processing of thoughts and feelings can be done in a nonjudgmental way. The answers come from within and I am just a guide along the healing journey.
