My Treatment Philosophy:

I understand that most of us want to feel happy and hopeful in our lives, but are you anxious, stressed, angry, lost, or disconnected? I can support you in feeling healthier, more balanced, and more connected in your life. Therapeutic experiences come in many different forms and fashions, and one way to facilitate healing and change is by talking to someone who offers a present, empathetic, and safe space. You are deserving of the changes you wish to see in yourself and your relationships, and one way to begin is by being seen, heard, and recognized for who you are as an authentic human being. You are already whole, and the path of healing is a lifelong voyage that you are capable of experiencing and embracing. Taking steps towards healthy change is one of the most significant acts of self-love, and I would be honored to help you in navigating through this individual journey if it feels aligned with your needs.

Who I Work With:

I specialize in working with adults, teens, college students, busy professionals, and those who value integrative healing modalities. I have experience working with a variety of mental health issues, some of which include substance use, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, multicultural issues, life transitions, stress, anger, grief, self-esteem, relationship issues, trauma, and both women’s and men’s issues. However, you do not need to be experiencing specific mental health concerns in order to receive counseling. I received my Bachelors of Science in Psychology from Virginia Tech, and I obtained my Masters of Science in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling through Virginia Commonwealth University.

What Therapy Looks Like in My Office:

My style of counseling is both holistic and collaborative, and I truly believe that you are the expert on your own life. I am here to work with you, as well as to help guide you towards discovering sources of clarity and healing within yourself. I believe therapy looks different for everyone, therefore, my approach is uniquely tailored to each individual’s needs. Although no therapy looks the same, the factors that stay consistent within my practice include my warm, genuine, and non-judgmental approach. I strive to help you feel empowered by not solely focusing on what is “wrong”, but to also acknowledge your strengths and values while using these as tools within our work together.

Why I Became a Counselor:

I chose to become a counselor in order to experience a career that is centered around helping others. I knew I would only feel fulfilled with a job that’s purpose is to help in some way. Now, there are tons of helping professions out there, so why did I choose counseling? I decided on this route for a multitude of reasons, but a lot of it had to do with some inherent qualities that I have always had. I’ve enjoyed being able to emotionally support and listen to others for as long as I can remember, and having personal strengths of compassion and empathy paired with my interest in psychology allowed me to feel called to this profession.

My Treatment Theories and Approaches:

There are a variety of theories and therapeutic approaches that drive my practice. It mainly depends on the client and their needs, however, a lot of my work is rooted in the use of holistic care, mindfulness, trauma-informed care, humanistic therapies, cognitive therapies, positive psychology, strengths-based approaches, and acceptance & commitment therapy. Using our lively Earth and movement can also enhance the therapeutic process, therefore, I also offer outdoor sessions along with walk & talk therapy held in a local park (when weather and scheduling allow for this).

My Certifications and Trainings:

Reiki Level I Practitioner Certification
Therapeutic Art Certification
Registered Behavior Technician Certification
Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale and Crisis Response Training

MY LIFE OUTSIDE WORK

Personal Life:

Lucy Cary's dogMy personal life consists of practicing self-care, devoting time and energy towards my loved ones, snuggling with pets, listening to music, cooking, and getting outside whenever I get the chance to!

My Favorite Movie or Song:

As the music lover that I am, it’s so difficult for me to pick one favorite song! However, the Grateful Dead is a band that’s near and dear to my heart, and their song “Scarlet Begonias” includes my all-time favorite song lyric: “Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right”.

If I Weren’t a Counselor I’d be (and why):

I would be a yoga teacher! Yoga has always been an important practice in my life, so if I weren’t a counselor then I would follow my passion for yoga more deeply. I’ve thought about still completing a yoga teacher training in the future for my own personal practice, but I can also imagine the fulfillment I would feel from facilitating classes and helping others learn the practice for their own well-being.

Hobbies/Interests/Passions:

Outside of work, I love seeing live music, trying out new cooking recipes, practicing yoga, being around animals, doing various outdoor activities, and spending time with friends and family. My “happy place” is being at a camping music festival where I can see live music throughout the day and night, practice yoga in the fresh air, and spend time in nature, all while surrounded by the people I love. It’s a beautiful combination for someone like me.

Psychotherapy is a kind of help in which the patient or client engages with a professional trained in the science and art of understanding and alleviating human suffering. As a Psychologist and psychotherapist, I stand in the belief that I don’t do anything “to” but rather “with” and “for” others – good therapy is collaborative - and that one must avoid a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

I believe one of the most powerful tools we have in life is our voice. When we are silenced and not allowed the opportunity to express ourselves it can result in depression and anxiety. Over time it will impair our self-efficacy and value...

My role is to be side-by-side with you navigating these complex emotions and situations so that you can find the power in your voice, your body, and your strengths. My goal as a counselor is to create a positive, and reassuring environment where you can be you with all the quirks that uniquely make you – you. I believe that you are the expert of your experience, you have the answers inside of you, and we are together on this journey to unlock what is getting in your way. It is my hope to help you find strategies to interrupt patterns that are no longer serving you and create healthier paths to allow you to “be the change you wish to see.” If you choose to let me be a part of this journey with you, it will be an honor because I recognize it is hard to trust again when there have been letdowns.

I believe in the therapeutic process and consider it to consist of many forms. Each person is so unique and has their own story to tell in their own unique way and in their own time. The one thing I say to my clients in every first session, is, it starts with you. You choosing to show up to your appointment, you choosing to seek out support, encouragement, advice, a listening ear.

Denise Simpson (she/her)

When one seeks out therapy, I believe they are saying that they want a change. Sometimes we need someone to listen and ask questions so that the processing of thoughts and feelings can be done in a nonjudgmental way. The answers come from within and I am just a guide along the healing journey.
