Who I Work With:
I often work with young adults, teenagers high school aged and older, as well as adults of any age. I work with people with a variety of different needs. My passion is with trauma work, and I also work with folks with substance abuse and addiction concerns, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, relationship issues, and folks who are in transitional periods of their life and looking for additional support.

What Therapy Looks Like In My Office: I think that one of the most important pieces of an effective therapeutic relationship is a safe and nonjudgmental space. My goal is to allow you the space to process and learn about all aspects of your identity and experiences. I believe that therapy needs to be individualized as we all have different needs, goals, and lives outside of the therapeutic space. I will work collaboratively with you to process trauma, identify healthy coping skills, better understand yourself and work towards meeting your goals – whatever they may be!

Why I Became  A Counselor: As someone who had difficult experiences with therapy growing up, I want to be able to provide a safe and nonjudgmental space for you to heal and become the best version of yourself, whatever that looks like for you. I’ve always had a passion for helping others and find that I’m my best self when I’m able to do that in a hands-on way.

My Treatment Theories and Approaches: I like to integrate different therapeutic styles into my practice. I do this in a way that’s individualized to the client, and at a pace that feels right for you. I am trained in EMDR therapy, CBT, motivational interviewing, and I implement some DBT skills into my practice. I am trauma informed and LGBTQIA+ affirming.

My Integrative Approaches to Helping Clients: I utilize a combination of mindfulness, talk therapy,  practical coping skills, and trauma work as appropriate, in my work with clients.

My Certifications and Trainings: I am formally trained in EMDR, CBT, and Motivational Interviewing.

My Life Outside of Work:

1: Personal Life: Outside of work, I love to spend time with friends and family. I enjoy spending time outside and trying different restaurants around the city. I have a German Shepherd / Siberian Husky mix named Pepper, and I love finding new ways to spend time together outside swimming, hiking, or playing fetch. In my down time you can find me reading, baking, or watching Grey’s Anatomy.

2: My Favorite Movie or Song: My favorite movie is probably Everything Everywhere All at Once, and my favorite artists are Manchester Orchestra and Sabrina Carpenter (I can’t pick just one song!).

  1. If I weren’t a Counselor I’d be (and why): I grew up wanting to be a writer and always had a passion for fiction and poetry, so maybe an author or journalist!
  1. Hobbies/ Interests/ Passions:

I have loved running for the past 10 years and it’s something I prioritize throughout the week. I also enjoy baking, playing with my dog, and reading. I also have a passion for the homeless population and believe that housing is a human right, I have spent a lot of time working with this population and believe they deserve more than the resources that are currently accessible to them.

Psychotherapy is a kind of help in which the patient or client engages with a professional trained in the science and art of understanding and alleviating human suffering. As a Psychologist and psychotherapist, I stand in the belief that I don’t do anything “to” but rather “with” and “for” others – good therapy is collaborative - and that one must avoid a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

I believe one of the most powerful tools we have in life is our voice. When we are silenced and not allowed the opportunity to express ourselves it can result in depression and anxiety. Over time it will impair our self-efficacy and value...

My role is to be side-by-side with you navigating these complex emotions and situations so that you can find the power in your voice, your body, and your strengths. My goal as a counselor is to create a positive, and reassuring environment where you can be you with all the quirks that uniquely make you – you. I believe that you are the expert of your experience, you have the answers inside of you, and we are together on this journey to unlock what is getting in your way. It is my hope to help you find strategies to interrupt patterns that are no longer serving you and create healthier paths to allow you to “be the change you wish to see.” If you choose to let me be a part of this journey with you, it will be an honor because I recognize it is hard to trust again when there have been letdowns.

I believe in the therapeutic process and consider it to consist of many forms. Each person is so unique and has their own story to tell in their own unique way and in their own time. The one thing I say to my clients in every first session, is, it starts with you. You choosing to show up to your appointment, you choosing to seek out support, encouragement, advice, a listening ear.
Denise Simpson (she/her)

Denise Simpson (she/her)

When one seeks out therapy, I believe they are saying that they want a change. Sometimes we need someone to listen and ask questions so that the processing of thoughts and feelings can be done in a nonjudgmental way. The answers come from within and I am just a guide along the healing journey.
