Sarah Worthy, LCSW

My Treatment Philosophy: I believe in meeting clients where they are—without judgment or rigid expectations. Each person’s healing journey is unique, shaped by their own experiences, and my role as a therapist is to provide a safe, compassionate space where they feel heard, understood, and free to explore their thoughts and emotions at their own pace. Building trust is essential to this process, and I respect each client’s readiness to share, always honoring their boundaries and comfort levels.

Therapy is a collaborative process. My clients are the experts in their own lives, and I am here to offer insights, education, and tools that support their growth. I strive to create an environment where clients feel empowered to set meaningful goals and work toward becoming the best versions of themselves. Rather than focusing on deficits, I emphasize strengths to help clients recognize their resilience, build on their capabilities, and create meaningful change in their lives.

Who I Work With: I work with teenagers, women, men, and non-binary individuals facing a range of challenges including depression, anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, anger management, relationship issues, life transitions, and daily stressors.

What Therapy Looks Like in My Office: I offer in-person sessions at the Richmond,VA office with telehealth options available for people residing in VA. I strive to cultivate an atmosphere of warmth, acceptance, and compassion, ensuring each person feels seen, valued, and respected.

Why I Became a Counselor: I became a counselor because of my deep passion for helping others and fostering meaningful connections. My past experience in the crisis intervention field reinforced this calling because while I enjoyed providing short-term support, I realized my true fulfillment came from building deeper relationships and guiding clients on their paths to healing.

My Treatment Theories and Integrative Approaches: I recognize that each individual has their own set of needs and tailor my therapeutic interventions accordingly. Rooted in trauma-informed care, I integrate a person-centered, strengths-based framework to foster empowerment, resilience, and self-efficacy. Other treatment theories that guide my practice include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and solutions-based therapy.

My Certifications and Trainings: Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certificate in Gender Violence Intervention

My Life Outside of Work:

  1. Personal Life: In my personal life I enjoy traveling, hiking, trying new restaurants, taking my dog on walks, and spending quality time with my loved ones.
  2. Favorite Movie: My favorite movie is probably Mamma Mia! not necessarily because it’s a cinematic masterpiece, but more so because it always puts me in a good mood!
  3. If I weren’t a Counselor I’d be (and why): I like to think I’d be working as a food critic because I love all types of food and different dining experiences.
  4. Hobbies/ Interests/ Passions: I love art, being outside, baking, and watching any reality TV show, specifically on Bravo!

When one seeks out therapy, I believe they are saying that they want a change. Sometimes we need someone to listen and ask questions so that the processing of thoughts and feelings can be done in a nonjudgmental way. The answers come from within and I am just a guide along the healing journey.

I believe in the therapeutic process and consider it to consist of many forms. Each person is so unique and has their own story to tell in their own unique way and in their own time. The one thing I say to my clients in every first session, is, it starts with you. You choosing to show up to your appointment, you choosing to seek out support, encouragement, advice, a listening ear.
